Expert projections show the Port could double its profitable cruise business in the next few decades. To accommodate new cruise ships and lines on the horizon, construction has begun on the new $50.5 million Cruise Terminal 1, located on the south side of Canaveral harbor to allow passengers and crew to walk to nearby dining and entertainment options for the first time. As one of the few Florida ports with space for cargo growth and expansion, Canaveral is focused on seizing growth opportunities. Two new cargo berths open this year, complete with ship-to-shore container cranes; long-planned channel expansion is under way; and initiatives are being pur-sued to bring rail service within easy reach of cargo customers. The Port recently celebrated its 60 th anniversary in November 2013 with the opening of the new Exploration Tower, a seven-story facility with interactive exhibits to introduce visitors from near and far to Florida’s Space Coast. The Tower is the first element of an extensive redevelopment of The Cove waterfront district to include a boutique hotel and many new entertainment, recreation, shopping and dining choices.
